About

About Akeelah House Publishing

Akeelah Publishing is an independent children’s press dedicated to culturally responsive stories that reflect diverse lives, nurture identity, and build strong literacy skills for young readers at home, in classrooms, and in community programs.

Services

At Akeelah House Publishing, we write, illustrate, and publish children’s books that inspire self-discovery, confidence, friendship, and joy. We believe that stories have the greatest impact when they extend beyond the page, which is why we weave meaningful lessons together with hands-on experiences that deepen understanding and create lasting connections. Through experiential literacy, students are encouraged to explore books from multiple vantage points—thinking critically, creating boldly, and discovering how literature connects to their own lives and the world around them.
Our Services
● Workshop Facilitation
Our interactive workshops introduce small groups to experiential learning through literacy. Participants engage with carefully selected books, art materials, discussion prompts, and collaborative activities that help them make meaningful connections to the themes and lessons within each story. Every experience is designed to strengthen comprehension while encouraging creativity, empathy, and self-expression.
● Engaging Author Visits
Bring stories to life through engaging author visits where participants have the opportunity to interact with the author, illustrators, and artistic contributors. These sessions offer behind-the-scenes insight into the creative process while inspiring students to ask questions, think imaginatively, and see themselves as readers, writers, and creators.
● Nzingha Reads! Literacy Enrichment Program
Nzingha Reads! is an arts-based literacy enrichment program that brings together curated literary materials, community experiences, and creative expression to strengthen literacy skills. Through reading, discussion, art, movement, and experiential activities, students build confidence as readers while learning to trust their own creativity. We encourage every participant to discover the power of their voice and develop the confidence to create and share stories of their own.
